About the project
The Rhino Project features the work of 8 Bittondi Printmakers, using a range of printmaking techniques to interpret Albrecht Dürer’s ‘Rhinocerus.’
in 1515 the famous German printmaker, Dürer, captured the imagination of the art world with his woodblock print titled ‘Rhinoceros’. At the time of making the print he had never seen a rhinoceros, but his curiosity and the Western world’s love affair with fearsome and glorious beasts from other continents combined to bring the rhinoceros into our Western consciousness, and Dürer’s image endures, though fantastical and almost mythical.
Of the five species of rhinoceros, three are now critically endangered, and the other two are vulnerable. It is quite possible that in the not too distant future the world could lose some or all of these species to extinction.
The generations to come may indeed find the rhinoceros to be a fantastical, almost mythical creature…
The ‘Rhino Project’ not only honours the incredible printmaking skills of the famous ‘non-living’ artist Albrecht Dürer by sharing his story of ‘Rhinocerus’, but at the same time as it brings to the viewer’s consciousness, ‘front and centre’, the terrible plight of many of the world’s critically endangered species, which are threatened by human intervention and global warming.
During the month of August whilst we support ‘SA Living Artists’, let’s not forget the world’s amazing ‘Living Animal Species’, before they become fantastical, mythical creatures…
